Business Travel Tips for Nigerians Travelling to the UK and Europe
Business travel between Nigeria and the UK or Europe is at an all-time high. Nigerian entrepreneurs, executives, and professionals are increasingly attending international conferences, closing deals in London and Frankfurt, and building partnerships across Europe. But navigating the visa process, managing long-haul flights, and arriving ready to perform at your best requires careful planning.
Getting Your Visa Right
UK Business Visa
The UK Standard Visitor Visa covers business activities including attending meetings, conferences, and negotiations. It does not permit you to work for a UK company or receive payment from a UK source.
Key documents for a UK business visa:
- Valid Nigerian passport (at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay)
- Completed online application form (UK Visas and Immigration portal)
- Biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in Lagos or Abuja
- Bank statements for the last 6 months
- Invitation letter from the UK company or conference organiser
- Company registration documents and evidence of your role
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) and return flight booking
- Travel insurance
Processing time: Standard processing takes 3 weeks. Priority processing takes 5 working days. Super Priority is available for same-day decisions at select locations.
Schengen Business Visa
For business travel to EU countries, you need a Schengen visa with additional business documentation: a formal invitation letter from the European company, a letter from your Nigerian employer confirming your role and purpose of travel, proof that your employer is covering travel costs, and conference registration confirmation if attending an event.
Choosing the Right Flights
From Lagos, you will connect through a hub. The most popular options for Nigerian business travellers are:
- Dubai (Emirates) — Excellent business class product, strong connectivity to all European cities
- Doha (Qatar Airways) — Award-winning business class, good Lagos–Doha–Europe timings
- Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) — Competitive pricing, extensive European network
- London Heathrow (British Airways) — Direct Lagos–London service
- Paris CDG (Air France) — Direct Lagos–Paris service, good for onward European connections
For trips of 7 hours or more, business class is not a luxury — it is a productivity investment. Arriving in London or Frankfurt well-rested and ready to perform is worth significantly more than the cost difference. Most business class tickets also include lounge access — quiet workspaces, reliable Wi-Fi, good food, and shower facilities.
Packing Smart for Business Travel
For trips of 3–5 days, experienced business travellers pack everything in a carry-on. This eliminates checked baggage fees, removes the risk of lost luggage, and means you walk straight out of the airport on arrival.
Carry-on essentials: 2–3 wrinkle-resistant dress shirts, 1–2 pairs of trousers, 1 suit jacket (wear it on the plane), dress shoes (wear on the plane), toiletries in 100ml containers, laptop and chargers, and printed copies of all key documents.
Power adapters: Nigeria uses Type D plugs. The UK uses Type G (rectangular three-pin), and most of Europe uses Type C or F (round two-pin). Carry a universal travel adapter.
Currency: UK uses British Pounds (GBP); Europe uses Euro (EUR). Notify your Nigerian bank before travelling to avoid your card being blocked. Consider carrying a small amount of USD as a backup.
Navigating UK and European Airports
Heathrow (LHR): Allow at least 90 minutes for connections. Arriving from Lagos on a non-EU passport means going through the "All Other Passports" queue — this can take 30–60 minutes during peak times.
Frankfurt (FRA): Efficient and well-organised. Connections are generally smooth, and the airport has excellent business facilities including shower suites and quiet work areas.
Paris CDG: Multiple terminals connected by shuttle buses. Know your terminal before you arrive and allow extra time for connections.
Professional Etiquette in the UK and Europe
Punctuality: In the UK and most of Northern Europe, punctuality is non-negotiable. Arriving even 5 minutes late to a business meeting without prior notice is considered disrespectful. Build in buffer time for traffic and transport delays.
Business Cards: Exchanged at the start or end of a meeting. Have yours ready and accept others with both hands as a sign of respect.
Dress Code: Business attire in the UK and Northern Europe tends to be formal — suits and ties for senior meetings. Southern Europe is slightly more relaxed but still professional. When in doubt, err on the side of formality.
Small Talk: British business culture involves significant small talk before getting to the point — weather, sport, and current events are safe topics. Germans and Dutch tend to be more direct and get to business faster.
Managing Jet Lag and Staying Productive
Lagos to London is a 6-hour time difference; Lagos to Central Europe is 5 hours. To manage it effectively: adjust your sleep schedule 2–3 days before departure, stay hydrated on the flight and avoid alcohol, get natural light on arrival to reset your body clock, and avoid napping on arrival day — push through to local bedtime.
